TüTH is the shapeshifting project of Damon J. Carruesco, who emerges with his most fully-formed statement of purpose on Love You Deserve.
Carruesco is the former bassist for Kranky minimalists Disappears, a role that perhaps belied his penchant for deeply soulful songcraft. While the back catalog of TüTH releases leans into rigorous conceptual terrain, making contact with modular, concrète, and ambient forms, Love You Deserve finds Carruesco at his most open and accessible, somehow occupying an improbably fertile space between Arthur Russell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Rat Heart.
Drawn from a series of self-released singles, these ten tracks cohere through their own internal logic, a place where naked yearning and lyrical abstraction coexist with ease. Even at its most uncanny, the music feels direct, intimate, and real.
This tension between presence and distance is evident from the opening lines of “Reach in time,” where a capacious and irony-free plea awaits, even as the song itself seems to arrive from a half-remembered era that never quite existed. “Flower” continues on this path, reducing language to its barest essentials, the voice drifting in from somewhere beyond the horizon. It is not until “Undreamed” that the distance collapses into something haunted and immediate, the dance between earnestness and elusiveness now fully established.
The second half of the record settles into a quieter mural of modern longing. “Prize Fighting” moves light on its toes, its ideas about freedom left floating, while “Stalking Pendulums” rides a swell of Lynchian noir before giving way to a single austere verse. The album coalesces around the quietly devastating title track, where a plaintive, almost tranquil vocal stops time for a moment before vanishing.
Love You Deserve is defined as much by its disarming sincerity as it is by its understated pop sensibility, holding a singularity of vision that feels unmarred by the noise of the outside world. It simply waits, patient and resolute, for the listener to arrive.
