French-born, Brussels-based artist Roméo Poirier finds home on the local Sferic records with his third full-length LP ‘Hotel Nota’. Keeping the ever-present influence of the sea in focus, Poirier projects himself to a fantasised coastline, imagining a landscape in flux, constantly evolving overtime through its constant interaction with the environment. Bass tones swell and retreat, colliding with smothered jazz notes and heavily layered, frothy textual abstraction, yet the pacing and rhythm remains loose and organic. Romeo’s pioneering underwater recording techniques lend themselves to the sticky sense of humidity that hangs heavy in the air, the chirping electronic processing echoing the early evening collective sound-mass of crickets whilst the breathy, muted trumpet style draws obvious comparisons to Jon Hassell. It feels totally beside the point to run through any of the tracks individually, the loose, easy going flow of the LP most suited to reclined, eyelids half-closed listening situations where the mind can project itself to another land. Through the use of heavily textured soundscapes and intricate overdubbing, Poirier has managed to sculpt his own imaginary landscape in a state of continual transformation. A meditation that feels as ageless as the atmosphere it inhibits. FUTURE CLASSIC! Housed in stunning postcard style reverse board / UV spot varnish sleeve. (Mint / New).
