Splash!!!Pioneering ‘wet concrete’ from French electroacoustic composer Michel Redolfi for French Musique Concrète institution INA-GRM with this two-part 1980 debut LP Immersion / Pacific Tubular Waves.On the A-side, Redolfi employs his research into the dynamics of the ocean, translating the kinetic power of Pacific Ocean breakers into pure electronic sound resulting in an immersive, multi-sensory experience covering a wide emotional spectrum via the Synclavier digital synthesiser.It mimics the unpredictability of the ocean’s surface and ever-changing, seemingly random textures that are generated from the behaviour of waves. Over on the other-side, Immersion plunges deeper inside, literally, as Redolfi captured the sounds of the deep ocean with a hydrophone whilst also blasting his ‘Pacific Tubular Waves’ piece out underwater with a loud speaker to see how its sonic properties reacted with the watery environment.Frothy micro-textures elicit a sense of excitement and freedom whilst denser, more ominous drones feel more in tune with the sense of unknown often associated with the deep ocean.The master blend of synthetic and organic (field recorded) sounds contribute to the 360° sense of place, bobbing in and out of the water and the Pacific’s sense of overwhelming vastness is created through the wide-screen application of micro/macro composition.An absolute stunner and perfect entry point to the INA-GRM canon!
