Heavily splattered, disorientating electro-acoustic / musique concrète collages from Swedish electro-acoustic wizard Ragnar Grippe.
Definitely better known for his 1977 LP Sand on Shandar, which is famously lightweight, shimmering, gently psychedelic and somewhat tranquillising compared to the downright challenging compositional work on Electronic Compositions of the same year. Here, it’s a four-part smorgasbord of ominous electronics, obliterated found-sound and haunted augmented dialogue drenched in harsh radio frequency-scanning frolics. It’s the yin to Sand’s yang. Or something like the strange malevolent cousin that’s determined to take you on an occasionally disturbing journey that whilst uncomfortable is an enriching experience. The liner notes explain that parts were recorded in Luc Ferrari’s Parisian studio and the French composer’s rough montages on INA-GRM (Presque Rien) feel comparable. Anyone looking to simulate the effects of a life-altering bad trip without taking consuming any LSD must check! (NM/NM - gatefold).
