Homegrown seasonal expressions self-released by total unknown UK musician Luke Cowan on their own Sad Cow outlet.
Infinite is the crevasse of bandcamp and the endless listings of independent contributions. Sometimes it’s too overwhelming but occasionally we’re caught off guard. Luke Cowan makes incredibly beautiful multi-instrumental music and is clearly an accomplished musician, yet exists well outside any commercial intentions. His three releases give the feel of genuine personal expression, almost impulsively. They take influence from the seasons and tangible earthy matter. It’s reflected in the music - a distant murmur of a running stream, clattering of wind-chimes and bird song beneath. Woody percussion and plaintive piano chords, each with their own character and subtle seasonal nods. Admittedly there seems to be a swell of this strain of bucolic cottage industry instrumental music - think that recent Odda label debut from Flaer, Plinth, Happy Return or even elements of Tara Clerkin Trio. But music this personal and well-realised feels special and it all has the feel of a record we’d be glad we took notice of 10 years down the line. (Mint / New)
