Is white blues guitar the last taboo? Once the underground has digested every thing from power electronics to jigs and reels via cumbia and ambient dub, are the kind of creamy technical heroics favoured by balding country doctors listening in their land rovers the final frontier? Will Joe Bonamassa be playing Cafe Oto? Is there a Walter Trout / James Ferraro collaboration in the pipeline? Probably not, but the level of endless zoned-out soloing featured here does feel like a step away from the usual technique-less scorched earth approach to no-fi guitar playing. There is a certain wry Belgian perversity in Ultra Eczema releasing a record that sounds like the most damaged end of solo Peter Green, a broken bedsit Gerry Garcia or the kind music Quicksilver Messenger Service are supposed to have made but never quite did. If this sounds off putting, fear not there are also shades of Sloth era Richard Thompson, Tom Verlaine or an amped-up Maurice Deebank. This strung-out bare-trees-in-the-pale-winter-sun guitar sound is surrounded but thick barely swinging bass and drums and just the right amount of low-in-the-mix stunned and stumbling male vocal. Somehow this record breathes new life into some of pop music’s hoariest old tropes in a way that is both slyly subversive and deeply enjoyable. Light the incense... (Mint / New)
