Mutated dream sequences from the lowest depths of the 1980s Italian DIY underground. F:A.R. were a pretty short-lived group operating throughout the 80s, fronted by Mauro Guazzotti (who later went out to produce some pretty gristly techno / synth as MGZ - do not recommend) with close associations to the seminal Milanese ADN label, responsible for Riccardo Sinigaglia, The Doubling Riders, Doxa Sinistra, Christina Kubisch to name but a few. F:A.R. though are able to reconfigure much of the gloomy industrial sound palette of the era and take it somewhere more interesting, through collaging disparate elements and playing with light and shade. Make no mistake, there’s no shortage of noise, distortion and atonality on offer here, but it’s all counterbalanced with flutters of ethereal synth tones, baroque classical samples and smothered field-recordings buried so deep in the mix, listening feels like staring down into a fathomless well. Undoubtably one of the key cult players in the fertile Italian experimental underbelly and ones not afraid to uproot / advance the aesthetics of industrial music. (NM/VG+ - with insert)
