Clouds of free woodwind and skittering percussion on this micro-edition private press beauty
The Parrot is the first of three solo releases by Jason Dungan also of improvising collective Squares and Triangles. Recorded at home in Copenhagen it is immersive and billowing, music like escaping gas. Veering between ragged ensemble pieces and more intimate duets and solos it makes a virtue of its roots in free music but avoids pleasing itself, always giving the listener something just repetitive enough to navigate by. There are hints of post-rock solemnity and the domestic chaos magic of 00s US free folk CDR experiments. The totally lovely lone clarinet pieces, ‘Kiosk Solo’ and ‘Colours’, both recorded outside, are warm and woody but heavily mournful. In the closer ‘CCRT’ Rhodes and drum patterns resist each other like water and wax until they are united by a sunny blur of ensemble brass. Released in a tiny edition of 75 this album is a glimpse at the working process of a singular musical mind.. (Mint / New)
