Impossibly deep, hallucinatory brains-baths from veteran artist Andrew Chalk, focusing his smeared pastoral ambient drift to a point of weightless, woozy intoxication on 2011 CD release Violin By Night.
Andrew’s work is certainly something most could easily take for granted, quietly active seemingly for the last 40 years, self-releasing his own music in remarkable handmade editions on Faraway Press wherever the time feels right. We’ve never heard anything from him we haven’t liked but recently revisiting Violin By Night really had us stunned.Taking the form of relatively condensed tracks (averaging 5mins a go but every one could easily go on forever), electronics and acoustic samples and smothered, splattered and stretched out to reveal their inner iridescent qualities.Yet they’re instilled with ye olde English sense of bucolic dread, or the windswept melancholy of the Yorkshire moors.Either way, there’s enough here to leave you feeling milk drunk after the first round and ready for more.Special mentions for the beautifully illustrated, mantlepiece worthy cloth-bound book presentation too.A humble master at work.(Mint / New)
