Far-flung acoustic collage works from Japanese engineer Masanori Yanagawa aka Amephone is presented on vinyl from Tokyo’s cult DIY outpost Enban Records. We would be totally oblivious to the existence of this one were it not for a tip off after a recent visit to see taste maker Pianola Records.Recorded in 1998, Retrospective is a wild, culturally-disorientating hotchpotch of collected sound and original music that could easily fall flat on its face if it wasn’t so FUN.It feels like we’ve circumvented the globe twice over by the end of the A-side, darting from free-spirited tabla jams laced with a myriad of languages to stark string pieces and Latin-infused folk.Moments drift in and out of focus, voices murmur and percussion oscillates in a dream-sequence of kaleidoscopic musical memories. One of the weirdest and most enjoyable things we’ve heard for some time..
