Debut LP from cult Chicago poetry-music duo Algebra Suicide - the husband / wife duo comprised of Lydia Tomkiw and Don Hedeker.
Been wrapping my brains for the last 30 minutes trying to think of a band that better encapsulates that irresistible blend of Mid-Western disaffection and distain, to no avail. Tomkiw’s half-sung / half-spoken wordplay is delivered with a near-emotionless 100-yard stare, deadpan and detached, whilst Hedeker’s backing track of cheapo rhythm box, Casiotone MT-40 and other budget equipment solidifies the feel of cool detachment and mundanity. But there’s beauty in the banal, the short songs are addictive and Tomkiw’s unusually bouncy vocal cadence keeps you hanging on for the next worldweary bout. The pair separated in the early 90s and sadly Lydia passed away in the late 00s but The Secret Like Crazy endures as one of the great outsider records of its age. Near perfect copy.
