Golden Dreams and Other Romanic Melodies - deep, wistful Persian piano pieces from early 70s Tehran.
Born in 1919, Iranian musician Javad Maroufi was one of the first musicians to perform Persian classical music on the piano. In the early days pianos were only found in royal palaces and within the homes of the upper echelons of society, but later many prominent musicians became to admire the instrument and popularise its music with ordinary people. Maroufi’s playing is contemplative and feels removed from the passage of time, like peering into a window of a faraway land that’s equally vague yet familiar. We’ve been obsessing over the difficult-to-penetrate world of Persian classical music for sometime, heightened by the incredible Iranian state broadcast Golha Recordings by pianist Morteza Mahjubi or repeats listens of Mustapha Skandrani’s dexterous Istikhbars And Improvisations. The blurring of the East / West axis is always something we have time for. It’s a shame so much of this music is out of reach, blame georgraphy, politics, lack of appreciation or all of the above - the Iranian Ahang Rooz label is a treasure trove for Persian classical music that deserves more attention. Much like the widely-celebrated recordings of the late Ethiopian musician Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, Maroufi is wandering solo looking for home, trapped in a time capsule of nostalgia… (VG+/VG+ - top copy, plays with little noise in quite parts)
