In-house guerrilla mixtape series Tabi Tapes returns after that head-splitting, dizzying Concrète collage inauguration from pianola, with another 90 minute bout of uncharted sonic explorations at the hands of Moscow-based digger / DJ Sasha Grishin aka Shiny Boots. Through extensive musical excavation, S.B unloads a lifetime of discoveries, weighted heavily towards totally unknown yet vital pockets of material from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe whilst managing to thread a cord between both traditional and experimental music with ease. Perfectly balanced, it drifts from whacked’ out Hungarian dub, thru finger-picked primitive steel-string guitar, via Lithuanian folk, political downtempo, odd-ball vocal pieces in a range of unidentifiable mother tongues, and so much more that falls well outside the realm of mere LANGUAGE-based explanation. Although this is not just for its own sake - this joining of dots between the traditional, modern and more abstracted is crucial and it feels like there’s been a real uncovering here on an ocean of sound that’s as relevant as any within the field.
