Without a doubt the term outsider gets thrown around at a lot of things these days. But what exactly is it? A sound, style or aesthetic. Turin’s S.P.N and the Discount event / label embodies this more than most, existing within no scene other than their own. Regularly scouring the city’s flee markets, S.P.N collects fragments of sounds, images and other faded memories, collaging and arranging them into a new alternate history. The mix here is effortlessly free-handed and eclectic, reimagining a zonked recalibration of the vast Italian underground, shining a light on barely known lo-fi CDrs, eerie minimal synth pieces, placated avant-composition and the prettier, folkier end of the industrial spectrum. It’s all shot-through with a strange middle-distance stare, trapped in the nether-zone between dream and reality, evoking the waltzing ghosts and faded sepia-hues of the crumbling ballrooms of the Piedmont capital. It’s very fitting that the great Sebald makes a cameo, wisely instructing us that when these ghosts do appear, to take care of them for a while - the perfect advice for a sequence of music and memories where everything might not be quite as it seems.
