Peace Pipe 8, melodic tractor-beam techno to levitate with.

I never went to Lost and I never saw Jeff Mills. As a teenager my experience of techno in clubs was limited to a few trips to Club UK. And I was too young to experience anything other than wonder at being there at all. I guess there was proper techno on the fringes of Megadog or Megatripolis, in those clubs I was present at sets by David Holmes, Plastikman and Andrew Wetherall, but too young and too green to really know what I was listening to. My memories of those experiences are cloudy now, and as much to do the lights and the smell, with the people around me and the spaces we were occupying.

Techno was something interior, dreamy expansive headphone music. It was experienced alone, or in small groups: in cars at night, walking the corridors of a tube station or drifting in my bedroom. Tapes of Selected Ambient Works/Electro Soma/Musik/Blech/Bytes/Trance Europe Express spooling slowly. My feet were on the ground in South London but my brain was somewhere on the edge of space, wandering toward a wormhole. Even now, this is the feeling I’m always seeking to remember.
