Hypercell Records commences with a release from the label head Bokonon. Writhe is a dub techno/techno EP themed around a journey through the desert interrupted by a flash flood carrying the listener away into the dark depths of the caverns below.
The record begins with Arroyo, the air thick with dust and heat, a dry wind settling over the land. And then, as if the heavens themselves cracked open, drums surged through the speakers, a flood of rhythm sweeping the soul out into the sunburned wastes, lost in some desert trance. As the flood finds its escape from the oppressive sun it pulls you deeper to the Cavern, where the dry heat gives way to a darkened pool, the flicker of moonlight on water, shadows stretching and writhing, figures moving there in the dark, with their silence holding secrets you’ll never quite hear. And as the dance of those lunar beings ebbs, Writhe takes over, the waters shifting into fury, crashing in on you like some ancient storm. There’s no place to run. No place to hide. You’re left searching for an escape, but none is given. And then Driven by Wasps comes, and you’re running now, your breath hot, a furious hum at your back, relentless, as you are chased down the tunnel. By wasps.
Inspiration for these tracks came from watching a lesson from Polygonia, after using some of the techniques she described the whole EP just flowed out of me in about a week.
