Awkward, inventive and utterly enchanting. Another thunderbolt from the impossibly fertile sub-subterranean Japanese Indie / DIY scene.
Scoppi is the second album from singer / songwriter Horisaki Nana, a new artist to us who first picked up a guitar 10 years ago and has played in a number of bands including that great Jon No Son we recently had and many others we’ve never encountered before. Ostensibly a pretty straight-forward collection of guitar & vocal tracks, Horisaki inflects a sense of playfulness at unexpected moments. Sudden flips into atonality and clumpy percussion are contrasted with jovial melodies. At other points its devastatingly beautiful and melancholic (see Long Night). It really feels like there’s an admirable stubbornness, commitment and preciseness at play here, an artist who knows what they’re trying to create. Much like the oft-referenced masterpiece from Izumi Hirakawa on Enban, Shizka Ueda’s A Small Sun CD or the recentish discover from Nagoya’s Yodo, Horisaki is another artist totally in-sync with their own brand of wooly homespun psychedelia. Absolutely one of our favourites of the year. (Mint / New - with free DL).
