It’s not often these days that there’s almost no information to go off when trying to understand a record. Back cover mentions Radio France, so perhaps it was a live broadcast. Who knows. Either way, pure unadulterated oud is never a bad thing. El Masry’s moves with contemplative patience, as if in direct conversation with his instrument, unaware of who might be listening. His dexterity unlocks a number of different phrases and moods, tapping into the iconic instrument’s history spanning across the Arab world.
