Very very strange Italian DIY puzzle-box LP from Venetian keyboard enigma Sandro Zane.
On most occasions, the cover of a record will offer some insight to how it might sound. But here on this 1985 self-release, the rules seem not to apply.Blocky retro-futurist text and a motley trio of moustache-sporting / hirsute men on the cover. We’re in uncharted territory. It’s something like an rogue, uncommissioned library LP, or the potential soundtrack to a film, TV show, occasion or purpose that may arise in the future.Zane covers a lot of ground though and the perhaps cocaine-fuelled ambition here is not without mention.Hard cosmic electronics and swirling psychedelic passages infused with tripped-out ethnic percussion, chuggy proto-industrial skits and blistered, sampled-landed 100bpm drum machine struts melting into spacier / headier moments of deep introspection.Comparisons: tricky.I guess Jon Hassell’s imaginary 4th world landscaping comes close, or some of the cottage industry synth work carried out by West Coast artist Kerry Leimer / Savant maybe. But this is all too strange to earnestly be placed within the same canon - a point driven emphasised by the very hand-made fold-out sleeve.A curious yet deeply inessential vinyl for the everyday collector but strongly tipp’d any hardcore fiend stalking the peripheries of bizarre outsider music of the 1980s.Rare!!!!(VG+/VG+ - some crackle due to poor pressing, sleeve in tact but showing ageing).
