Fractured and fragmented barely-there ‘broken music’ from Madrid's from Madrid's Miradasvacas via Glasgow’s formidable 12th Isle label.

We’re admittedly very slow on the uptake here, but sometimes certain music can a little take time to dig itself in.  Miradasvacas is the joint project of Pablo Mirón and Juan Vacas, a pair of multidisciplinary artists involved with the Real No Real event series and Ediciones Fontenebro label.  Their beautifully considered recording style collages scraps of field-recordings and found sound acquired throughout a three year period of performing throughout Europe and South America.  Discreetly bolstered by recordings of violin, harmonica and remnants of old radio transmission, the pair craft absorbing sound assemblages with a commendable sense of restraint.  It’s the sort of music that seems to dissolve itself into the room, fogging the environment and drawing you in closer.  Warbling tape loops unspool over distant lonely piano chords, each element slowly melting into another.  The duo cite the post-fluxus ‘broken music’ canon as an influence, which seems apt as we can see parallels with Henning Christiansen’s incredible Symphony Natura LP on Slowscan or the work of Arthur Pétronio, but there’s also a wider kinship with the homey Cotton Goods / Humble Bee aesthetic or humble DIY approach of Malvern Brume.  Wonderfully subtle and worthy of your time.  (Mint / New).
