Homemade instruments and plucked fields of sound as Blue Lake’s second album sees him retreat further into his private world.

Moving is the second of three solo releases by Jason Dungan also of improvising collective Squares and Triangles. Another micro edition of 50, this record feels even more intimate than its predecessor Parrot. The whole thing was recorded solo and intricately woven together in a Copenhagen studio. Based around self-built string instruments ‘loosely modelled on the zither, but incorporating elements of the banjo and the guitar’ and Dungan’s renewed interest in the cello, some moments have an airy sunlight-on-blonde-wood feeling that’s irresistible. Zither and flute tumble around each other in the opener ‘Morning Light’ and the scattered notes of ‘Mote’ are all that’s visible of a submerged ballad. The epic ‘Lattice’ and ‘Richardson, Texas, 1993’ use the cello to bring a darker more abrasive feeling that balances the beauty perfectly. The whole thing calls to mind William Eaton’s shimmering tapestries of self-built string instruments and Stephen Micus’s Zen music constructions for ECM. Another stop on the narrow road.
