Timed to perfection, Gothenburg lynchpin Arv & Miljö lands this winter instalment to their seasonally themed series with Ensam Är Nattens Rymd Över Vita Vägar - an ode to the endless childhood winters of the Northern latitudes and modern day snow slush of the city. In keeping with its Spring and Summer relatives (Himmelsvind / Svensk Sommar I Still Frid) we’re placated with gritty longform drones, caked in tape hiss - although this time it’s lonelier and more desolate. The crackle of spring’s celebratory fireworks are replaced by sound of mushy footsteps trudging through the windswept Swedish hinterland, whilst the warbling lofi synth drones mimic the feel of being caught in a thick whiteout. We’re exposed to the elements but there’s a weird feeling of contentment, as if trapped inside a log cabin whilst watching the snow-storm rage outside. I’ve had this one a few times in a row and definitely had me zoned out unexpectedly, gazing out of the window at nothing.. pulsating, micro-tuned synth adjustments evoking a sorta lo-budget Eliane Radigue, or much more insular interpretation of Joel Vandroogenbroeck’s ‘devotional meditation series, OR that excellent Harsh Miniatures CD from Malvern Brume for a more recent angle. Perfect seasonally appropriate music, with guest appearances from NZ artists Helen Johnstone (The Garbage & The Flowers) and P Wits.. (Mint / New)
