Holy shit.. mythical Parisian sound-artist, composer and plastician Anne Gillis makes a rare emergence out of the shadows with this new solo album coming some 27 (!) years after her previous outing on the Euragine CD in 1994. Few names evoke such reverence as done the name Anne Gillis here at ANF - her hack-sawed tape experiments and collaged noise tapestries self-released via her Rangehen label rank highly as some of the rawest, most punk and singular works within the genre, made all the more tantalising by her never responding to any of the attempts at contact I’ve made the past few years. Here back working with Japanese shop / label Art Into Life, Anne spirals down deep into DENSE, heavily layered pieces of tape his and quivering sub-sub bass, traces of smothered voice lurk somewhere in the mix but the atmosphere is too tense, too oppressive to make any sense of it. Other pieces raise the tension with critical error sounds and mangled voices, buried deep with engulfing sound picture, whereas the horror-house rhythm track ‘No2’ nods to Anne’s earlier synth-leaning project Devil’s Picnic. A total stun grenade, best enjoyed LOUD and a must check for fans of Amateur Hour, Vox Populi, Soviet France, Michel Chion +++++.. (Mint / New - slight seam split occurred in transport)
