Early Carbophonics features Hirsch’s own electroacoustic invention, the Carbophone, which is an array of carbon rods, metal bars and rubber bands that acts like an African Kalimba but with unusual overtones and timbres.  The eight polyrhythm pieces capture lopsided rhythm-play, occasionally FX treated to create an otherworld atmosphere that’s difficult to place.  There’s that similarly detached sense of intrigue found in some of the Werkbund records, or try to imagine Francis Bebey playing with Porter Ricks.
