One hour, one minute and one second of lush ambient techno dream-scaping cut from the golden-era of UK electronic music.
Despite being active for only two years, the short-lived London label i.t.p recordings left a revered dent in the canon of halcyon-days UK techno that far outweighs its output. Quality not quantity. This 1994 2LP from British duo MLO captures the true essence of this explosion of creativity in the early / mid 90’s better than any. It’s trapped in the buffer-zone between sweat-drenched open-ended dancefloors and the altogether more cosmic and mind-expanding ambient backrooms of days gone by. Softly lapping arpeggios, lavish sweeping pads and glacial percussion occasionally swelling the receding whilst basslines gather steady momentum to form a trance-inducing 4/4 pulse. It’s a sound many have tried to emulate, but really nothing comes close to the horizontal luna-rovering spread across the two discs here. Warp’s seminal Artificial Intelligence series may take all the props for creating this world, but elsewhere there were purple-lid backrooms across the country where something weirder was happening. One of the very best for a scene that will perpetually keep giving. (NM/NM - brown bag sleeve).
