Self-released French free jazz synapse sizzler from one-off quintet Armonicord, first out in 1977 to little fanfare, forgotten and now recently excavated from a basement on the outskirts of Lyon.  Band leader and saxophonist Jouk Minor started out playing flamenco guitar before having his DNA rearranged by the likes of Albert Ayler and Sunny Murray.  Feeding off this and the creative explosion in 70’s Paris, he played with French jazz giants François Tusques, Alan Silva and Bernard Vitet before forming his own group for the Espirits De Sel LP.  It’s split into three separate pieces, the first ‘Deuxième Jour’ being the straightest and most contained - the percussion is tight and varied, with brave wind sections with a standout stripped-back drum break passage.  The musicians loosen up for the other two pieces, unrestrained and operating well outside any defined structure, with added unusual instrumentation such as the the Sintir bass lute usually found in Moroccan Gnawa and more strikingly - a harpsichord, which adds a welcome and unexpected baroque touch.  Must check for anyone who likes their jazz served wild and a special mention to the popping slime green gatefold cover - how did anyone miss this??  (Mint / New - unplayed deadstock).
