Warm and woolly home-spun folk assembled by Spillage Fete label associates A Happy Return. Strange, tender and all frayed-around-the-edges. TABI TAPES 11!
Somewhere up on the East Coast of Scotland of Scotland, in a small fishing village, there’s a house where the North Sea comes within touching distance. Inside lives a couple, happily making music on their own terms, without electricity, snugly inside their own world where time ticks just a bit slower than everywhere else. Their collection here offers a small glimpse of these surroundings and an insight into the sort of musical foundations that have unpinned some of our favourite DIY music of the last 10 years (Jam Money, Bons, A Happy Return).
All of these tracks were new to us but the simple, endearing qualities of the sections instantly give a vague sense of familiarity. It’s a trip down the endless (!) rabbit-hole of (mostly) 00’s CDR and micro-edition folk recordings, caught well within the deeply interconnected Pan-European / US network of DIY musicians who were fervently producing this stuff at the time. It’s a tricky world to navigate, but here its highlights are threaded together with ease, capturing a feeling of escapism and eccentricity. It’s playful, welcoming and subtly spiked with just the right amount of weirdness. Like going round to an old friend’s for a cup of tea and not wanting to leave. (Mint / New - with DL)
