Achingly beautiful late 50s bolero from Puerto Rican songstress Sylvia Rexach - masterpiece.
One of those rare records where on first listen is like getting hit by a thunderbolt.Scraps of information online suggest Sylvia Rexach spent most of her life underappreciated and unrecognised, musicologists of the time struggled to classify her distinctive brand of folk within the canon of Latin music. Her vivid songwriting was classed more as poetry, although my non-existent grasp of Spanish obviously leaves a gaping whole in the whole understanding of this music, which I personally don’t have any reference for.But good songs are good songs.Reaxch’s hoarse, tobacco-soaked vocal chords convey a sense of melancholy and old-world romance that is universal.Beyond language.Sylvia died young at the age of 39 but left behind a collection of music that’s infinite.A perfect record.(VG+/VG+)
