Transcendent psych-fusion alchemy from uber-cult French underground experimental collective Omertà.
You’d be entirely forgiven for not having heard of Omertà—their profile is low and their records near-unobtainable. Personnel involved include members of pagan trance-folk ensemble Tanz Mein Herz alongside La Société Étrange and, of course, dual-headed guitar melodist Megabasse. If the NWW list were still going today, Omertà would be top.
Their improbable, dream-like blend of loose-limbed folk, gentle psychedelia, open-ended krautrock structures, and dubwise mix tactics unfurl patiently to leave pastoral melodies lingering in the air. Muted acoustic string plucks, clacking hand percussion, and low-frequency bass hums drift through generous room reverb and subtle tape-hiss decay. Vocals—equal parts spoken-word cabaret and traditional folk-chant—are delivered with an assured, quiet authority, lending a galvanized focus to compositions that evolve organically around repeated harmonic motifs. Born of ancient Corsican soil and sea-salted air, traditions of past and present coalesce here into a radical, deeply romantic journey of slow-burning psychedelic lament. A crucial transmission from one of the most singular voices of the European underground. (Mint / New)
