Hazy dream-state folk from YODO band member Kamitani - yet another genius piece of home-recording seemingly lost in the void.

As the evidence continues to build, it increasingly seems so that Nagoya played host to a wonderfully fertile DIY scene that’s so far given us the beautifully sentimental album from YODO, alongside Nana Horisaki and now Kamitani.  2010 release Carla Cardinal is a mishmash of styles, on the face of things stylistically divergent, but threaded together with a strong sense of nostalgia and introspection.  On one hand there’s wooly homespun folk, enriched with the familiar hiss of a cheap tape recorder and subtly ghazal-like vibes that lull us into a gently psychedelic headspace.  Whilst the extended ‘Nightview&nostalgy’ is a serene piece of loopy levitation, spiralling around glacial chiming motifs with fuzzy interjections buried deep within.  It’s exactly the sort of piece you could listen to all day, melting into the environment and never quite knowing where you are.  Elsewhere the enigmatic Kamitani dabbles in almost dancey tracks which despite being a world away from the cosy moments early on, offer a glimpse of a producer with obvious talent.  Comparisons tricky, but there’s a similar worn-in feeling found in that of The Sprigs, Aki & Ippei or the gauzy domestic feel of Craig Tattersall’s Humble Bee / Cotton Goods label.  Always nice to land on something with zero fanfare or context and just be taken away.  (Mint / New)
