Enter another arrestingly beautiful solo piano record into the fabric of our everyday lives. Brodsky is a new name for us, yet a little background check reveals the Baltic musician is well schooled in the discipline of minimalism, a trait that heavily underpins this one. As with the solo LP from Mashu Hayasaka on our own label last year, it can be difficult to articulate how and why music seemingly so exposed and unadorned can have such a profound affect. Our responses feel so innate, as if each note of the piano is fluttering on the precise emotional responders in our brain. A bit much perhaps, but this is a stunning record. Brodsky’s compositions strike a balance between blue-hued melancholia / nostalgia and hopelessly romanic, occasionally embellished with subtle flourishes of vibraphone that adds a Martin Denny-esque cosmic / exotic twist.
