Truly singular, feral explorations into the potential of the hurdy-gurdy with the privately released '86 LP 'Paysages Intérieurs Vielle à Roue' (Inner Landscapes) from French artist Remy Couvez.  Demonstrating a real bond between musician and instrument, Couvez manages to conjure up a sonic world that is both arresting and contemplative with an obvious orientalist gaze, reimagining the sound 'of the east' through ancient European instrumentation.  The palette is bare, occasionally adding minimal percussion and subtle swathes of synth, yet the French artist is able to scale some dramatic heights akin to Pauline Oliveros' legendary accordion pieces through manipulation of tone and timbre whilst the harmonies maintain an unique, almost medieval feel.  Highest recommends for fans of Theatre Of Eternal Music / Tony Conrad, Phil Niblock, Pierre-Jean Croset +++, minimal / drone music in general or the interception between east & west!
