Vivid 360° aural assemblage from Madrid’s DIY underground key-worker Pablo Mirón for in-house guerrilla mixtape series Tabi Tapes. Strap in!
Where to start. Be it through his joint Miradasvacas project, the acutely created performance series Real No Real, beautifully published editions on the Ediciones Fontenebro label or string genuinely jaw dropping self-published mixtapes, Pablo is a name we regularly come into contact with. His selections here showcase an advanced and explorative slurry of obscure classical recordings morphing into wilted trumpets, garbled radioplay, fragments of lo-fi songs and smothered field recordings. It seems there’s nothing off-limits as the ghosts are summoned from the grooves, yet there’s a preciseness in the choice of sounds coupled with a deft sleight of hand to create the illusion of a continuous dream sequence. The B-side dumps us out on the other side and brings us back into reality with an effortlessly sequenced spread of strange and wonderful songs. Scorched and vapourised psychedelic music, blurry regional folk and loose-limbed percussion tracks that have had us backpedaling and desperately waving the Shazam around all week. I guess it’s no secret that we hold this style of mixing at the zenith of appreciation here at ANF and it feels totally safe to say that Pablo has delivered a monster here aimed squarely at intrepid souls like himself.
