Super shonky psilocybin-laced Swedish psych on the excellent 90’s label Xotic Mind Productions.
Seemingly active through the early 90’s, Xotic Mind is an enigmatic label that’s worthy of anyone’s attention, responsible for putting out works from the mysterious S.T. Mikael, Anatolian psych legend Erkin Koray (who unfortunately passed this year) and a spattering of other artists who never got off the starting block. This debut from Adam Axelzon lays out four rich instrumental psych guitar tracks each heavily dosed up with oriental influence - sitar, tabla, bansui - and plenty of pastiche new-age signifiers - gentle running streams, iridescent synths, you get the picture. It’s surely destined for failure, apart from the fact that it’s actually incredible. Axelzon’s lysergic, slow-motion psych squeal on the untitled B2 track sounds like he’s riffing for his life, whilst the gentle meditational dance of B1 demonstrates a genuine multi-instrumental talent. Topped off with the badly-printed, hand-pasted artwork and amateur insert, it looks like a GCSE art-school project, but one we’re fully behind.
