Brilliant left turn towards bumpy, defiantly-abstract, almost dance music from drummer and electro-acoustic hero Will Guthrie
Will Guthrie started his career as a jazz drummer active in the Australian avant garde. His work then took a long detour away from the drum kit through junk electronics, extreme amplification and electro-acoustic techniques, documented on a series of solo and collaborative recordings for Black Truffle, MEGO, Rune Grammofon and his own Antboy label. On People Pleaser pt. II he’s at the drums, but interacting with pre-recorded speech and twisted up found sound including, most interestingly, a series of choppy but soulful hip-hop loops. Tempos slide across each other, time judders, stops and reignites, flickering like a candle flame, while shortwave radio sounds and seance voices crowd the space. The result ends up close to the territory more usually occupied by Afrikan Sciences or Theo Parrish at his most rough and weird. Although its origins are in Australia and it was recorded in France this is music that feels like wandering in the contemporary American night with no map... (Mint / New)
