Label: DeepChord – dcv07 Format: Vinyl, 12" Country: US Released: 17 Mar 2000 Genre: Electronic Style: Dub Techno, Minimal
Prime plate of minimal dub-techno from the earliest stages of the immense DeepChord project via their own self-titled, prolific yet short-lived label arm. Feels like it's impossible to even start talking about dub-techno without mentioning Basic Channel / Chain Reaction, although in reality it's surely the highest praise one could bestow to acknowledge that this pair are the only ones to even come close to the blueprint laid out by the BC / CR crew and had more or less completed by the time they wrapped up the early 00's. The production throughout is dank, cavernous, stark yet most importantly.. SIMPLE. Through my own very regular very private plunges into the deepest recesses of the genre I've never quite been able to put a finger on why some pieces stand-out amidst an ocean of monotonous imitations. But it's just THAT groove, which each of these possess in abundance replete with shimmering metallic chords, big sprung rubbery bass weight and those crisp incessant hi-hats - all of which would be equally at home on repeat or pummelling the dance floor. More dub techno in the club pls! (NM/NM - In original DeepChord sleeve).
