Great curveball label comp of ambient dance sprawl from slow growing Montreal label Temple
Montreal, like Aarhus and various bits of Australia, seems to specialise in this kind of thing at the moment. Various artists 12s and LPs full of oddball and deeply pleasing takes on deep house, ambient techno and jungle. A playful light touch approach to genre anda knowing balance between joyful melody and club muscle seems to be the order of the day. This comp, the 8th release on the Temple label run by the excellent Ex-Terrestrial and associates, is a perfect example. Apart from a couple of notable exceptions it focuses on the fertile cross pollination of downtempo and drum and bass. Purring snares, doped out pads and glitching digi timestretch are all present and correct. Special mention to Perila’s narcoleptic Can We Just be Real and Ex-terrestrial’s whirring Inlet. Those outliers I mentioned are the what makes it for me though. Taroplane’s kosmische romance is a welcome addition. As is the sleepy downer folk of Gunnera’s beautiful We all go Blind, a total red herring in the best possible way.. (mint / new)
