Totally singular, one-of-a-kind VA comp showcasing the seemingly bottomless underbelly of the eccentric DIY avant-garde scene coming out Japan in the 80s on the short-lived yet prolific Pinakotheca imprint. Definitely a part of that uniquely Japanese strain of DIY punk-informed, minimal-synth / avant-garde way of thought akin to the legendary Vanity imprint or more elusive D.D Records yet splintering out into the similarly informed European rogues Ptôse or even the York House tapes in the UK. But even still - its haphazardly curated approach creates this snapshot in time of a scene that once you know exists makes you wonder how much MORE stuff you've been missing out on until now. Some of these artists appear on this comp only - like Akira Okada who contributes two prickly / jangly cuts then seemingly vanishes from existence (WHAT MYSTERY) or the similarly elusive OMC whose two short but sweet, creeping / screeching additions ensure your attention is fully maintained. Never far from the action, David Toop and Steve Beresford appear with a short burst of improv kitchen-pot gamelan, with the previously mentioned French deviants Ptose following and delivering two pieces of roughshod mutant-synth under their P.P.P alias. But it's the negative space in between these home-brewed DIY fits that makes this comp so special - the cleansing field-recording of a bustling stream or dada-influenced directions of how to cook a cabbage or the drunken singing. It's completely futile running through this one individually, or even trying to describe it so I'm giving up - 100% more than the sum of its parts. RARE - pls get in touch if interested for price / details / pics (Top copy / with inserts).
