I had always thought the world of collecting 60s singles was sewn up. The same six boomer Atlantic executives circling round the upper reaches of Popsike, peeling off five figures for a styrofoam 7. A closed book, and a fairly dull one at that. Likewise the world of compilations based around this stuff. Pebbles/Rubble/Nuggets/Fading Yellow/Chocolate Soup for Diabetics spinning on and on into the sunset. I guess I was wrong. He seems to specialise in uncovering the lovelorn autumnal ballads rather than the fuzzy uptempo stuff that normally gets garage collectors frothing. It’s tough to pick a favourite here. The whole compilation sits so well together, conjuring up a mood of hushed, slightly spooked, sad sack perfection. A future classic... (Mint / New)
