Intense, revelatory collection of traditional music on the much-loved Music Of Oceania series focusing on the indigenous Kaluli people of Papua New Guinea. Infinitely more personal and intimate than others in this incredible series, one side here is dedicated to specific songs that are traditionally sung to make men cry, and collective weeping that makes woman sing. Any recordings from this isolated part of the world are rare, but getting a glimpse into highly personal ceremonies where this practice of communal, cathartic weeping takes place really represents a truly unique and important moment within the fields of ethnomusicology. It's seriously powerful, visceral and moving, highlighting a unique communal bond within a seldom contacted society that's so far removed from the Western world. On the other side, there're pieces that show 'songs and sounds of everyday work and recreation', mostly solo and group vocal polyphonies and percussion pieces that are rooted in the fabric of daily life. But most interestingly, hearing how the Kaluli people use and incorporate the sounds of nature into their song, blending the sounds of the forest, birds and insects which highlights the unique symbiotic relationship they have with their environment.
