Ancient, mystifying minimal folk compositions backed by subtle electronics on this originally privately distributed 90's cassette from Ukrainian artist Svitlana Nianio, beautifully represented by Tom James Scott's excellent Skire imprint. Heavily centred around stripped-back motifs and hypnotic use of repetition, Nainio's otherworldly, siren-like vocals are utterly transcendent - adding to this secret, enchanting musical microcosm that feels like it's been cloistered away for generations. There's an underpinning of traditional slavic folk throughout, infused with an awareness of west-coast minimalism in the repeating organ manoeuvres that feel straight out of Terry Riley's eastern-attuned playbook.
