Obscure entry in the private ‘family label’ of legendary multidiscipinary artist Dieter Roth.
The plainly titled Summer Music seems to be the result of a spontaneous and uninhibited recording session at Roth’s ‘Bali’ studio in the Icelandic town of Mosfellssveit with a group of Visual Communication students from the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts. Whether the students were willing or force to perform remains unclear. In typical Roth fashion, the recordings are impuilsive and embrace a sense of wide-eyed amateurism. It’s a raw sonic college captured in the moment - true improvisation - between non-musicians, domestic sounds are unfiltered, all sounds are welcome. Five parts capture five different scenarios, varying wildly between loose vocal interplay, full-frenzied assaults with everyone going at once and schmaltzy piano tinkering. At more than a few moments though the clouds break to leave a warbling organ and sweetly sentimental organ notes where you can feel the personnel in the room know they’ve locked into something special.
