Struggling to think of a record that left a bigger dent in my very malleable 19 y/o brain than this one, after mining through the Chain Reaction back-cat and landing on this, one off release, no real info on the artist, creating this ephemeral existence and fuelling the rumour mill.. the myth of Shinichi!  Fast forward many years and the Demdike guys expertly uncloaked (some) of the mystery surrounding the hermetic Japanese artist and paving the way for future releases that have ended up being classics in themselves.  There’s little to add that’s not already been said about this cult 12”, a sorta anomaly nestled within the Chain Reaction discography that adds distinctly human feel, albeit heavily obfuscated, to the label’s harder, metallic and generally more mechanical aesthetic.  There’s a distinct love-struck, lost-at-sea feel throughout - the fizzing synth froth and hovering dub-chords on the opening title track and more straight-up, delay-drenched ‘Plug and Delay’ that adds a more driving 4/4 elements to the aquatic dub-scapes pioneered by label mate Vladislav Delay.  The bizarrely short ‘Rainstick’ sets up for a deep, 110bpm rain-soaked chug at the end of the record that could easily unfold over 10 minutes, but then just… ends, after about 90 second.  The B-side more than makes amends but this under-nourishment, ‘The Red Line’ taking up the entire side and stretching out endlessly with it’s deep, staring-into-the-distance blurred-out melancholy that offers a dissociated, yet very human feel that’s at odds with the rest of the label’s output.  Seriously the best ever, and certainly more available via the DDS reissue, but OG Shinichi on CR is a biggie for the dub-techno lifers!  (VG+++)
