We always fall hard for this stuff. Effortlessly simple yet affecting piano sketches collaged against the everyday hubub of daily life. Creating Music that takes you out of the everyday, projecting you into another place where time ticks differently is no easy feat. Shela isn’t a name we’ve heard before, but apparently he’s a mainstay within Lisbon’s thriving music scene. The playing here, slow, gentle and soaked in a sense of wilting, melancholic romance, feels spontanous and played with the strongest sense of honesty. We’re thinking of the dream-state in the dead centre of the recent Salenta & Topu LP, the dewy-eyed sound collage works of Matthew Sullivan or the dream-laced assemblages of Nuno Canavarro’s epic Plux Quba. So wonderfully unasumming and unforced, this isn’t music that demands your attention but is definitely more worthy of it than most. (Mint / New)
