Sublime acoustic folk holy grail cut from the deep Mexican underground of the 1980s - deadstock siren!
Often less is more. Rolando Chia casts a ghostly shadow on an excruciatingly scant discogs artist page, only showing a scattering of enigmatic private releases, all of them hard to find, or even listen to. Personally speaking, Chia’s ‘Sara Juega Y…’ has occupied high position on my own want list for a long time and originally discovering it represented a breadcrumb trail into a rich and vivid underground scene in 1980s / 90s Mexico that’s still of extreme interest. This mysterious release though, a personal collection of delicate, intricate folk compositions played on guitar, unadorned and unembellished. Chia’s playing is technical and lively but full of feeling, you can feel a dotted line back to American Primitivism / Guitar Soli movement - Basho / Fahey and their work on Takoma , yet there are subtle latin inflections that often a unique sense of place. It’s a record that’s totally out of time, steeped in the golden hue of the early hours with a labyrinth of fine details to get lost in for a heady afternoon spent day dreaming. Perfection.
