Tabi Tapes turns 6! Keeping things close to home, the brains behind Stockport’s premier fringe music cassette label Regional Bears turns in a 90 minute trip that muddies the waters of a traditional DJ ‘mix’ and an original piece. It’s a subliminal sensory experience, where we’re listening 2nd hand to sounds in situ - traditional songs rendered semi-recognisable in uncatagorisable fidelity, under thick coatings of tape hiss, manipulated, mangled, collaged and recontextualised into a new life. Gavin Bryars’ heartstring yanking ‘Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet’ bleeds through the cracks of almost unbearable tape noise and the tedious, impersonal chatter of hold music - the sound of the beautiful clashing with the utterly mundane - whilst wood pigeons call in the back garden. It’s the act of listening to someone else listening, creating a surreal, liminal space where it’s not quite clear what’s on the tape and what is real life. Reference wise, there’s an obvious influence from the tape works of Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet - the sounds of everyday life unleashed to reveal their unappreciated psychedelic properties - but ultimately this is truly out on its own. Regional sound art of the highest quality. 50 copies only! (Mint / New)
