Spiritual super-fusions from Brazilian talented composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel.
Some artists make music and others use it as a means of expressing their soul. Ermel definitely falls into the later category, training originally as a filmmaker and anthropologist before embarking on a spiritual quest spending time living with indigenous communities in Brazil, collecting sounds of the natural world and experimenting with synthesisers. A key point in her career came after studying Tai Chi with taoist master Liu Pai Lin, which she further incorporated into her artist practice, manifested in the slow, patient and considered nature of her music. There’s an airy ebb and flow throughout this 1989 LP, almost as if the record natural changes direction with the way the wind is blowing. Finger-picked guitar notes slowly unfurl against arching strings whilst soft electronic pads hover over in the middle distance. Ermel’s cross-cultural experiences lead to an usual east/west alchemy that feels deeply personal, reflecting a life lived in search of new experiences. (VG+++ - Brazilian OG).
