Rare and enigmatic grail from the Wire / Dome related sprawl - Bruce Gilbert, Graham Lewis and Angela Conway’s (AC Marias) one-off ‘pop’ band P’o on their own Court Records label.Coming after the first three Dome records, P’o formed with the intention of becoming a live band, but after drummer Peter Price announced plans to emigrate, the group hastily rushed to the studio to lay down what they’d managed so far. It’s deliberately obfuscated, making use of negative negative space and the emergent firelight digital sampling technology.Opener ‘Time And Time’ blends Lewis’ deadpan vocals with drowsy industrial drums and distant mechanical clammers - vacant and emotionally detached with an obvious air of arthouse cool.Elsewhere instrumental pieces like ‘Earl’ are more collaged and left wide open, eerie atmospheres layered with creaking doors, tumbling drums and drifting strings whilst ‘Blind Tim’ feels more impulsive and improvised with David Tidball riffing, or almost arguing with himself, over a bubbling abstracted riff.. kinda reminding of those iconic records Maggie Nichols did with Peter Nu on Leo.Apparently impossible to reissue and increasingly tricky to spot.. big one!!
