Otherworldly improvisations by French instrument builder, musician and poet Pierre-Jean Croset on this self-released recording taken from a concert given in May 1979.Pierre slots in a long linage of musicians exploring the potential of unusual tuning scales, prime-number ratios / just-intonation and overtones as a means of sacred communication with the profound, much like La Monte Young’s infinite epic ‘The Well Tuned Piano’, or the micro-tunings of Pauline Oliveros and Eliane Radigue. Here, Croset offers a one hour performance with his custom-tuned / custom-built electronic Lyra - an 18-stringed instrument designed to be laid flat and capable of supplying 800 available notes - resulting in a serene, deeply mediative montage of gently meandering notes that surge and retreat in intensity. It’s executed with the purist lucidity and ultimate simplicity, purely minimal in scope and lacking in rhythm or melody, but instead an exploration into the innermost workings of sound and how we perceive it.On first glance, it’d be easy to overlook these recordings as your typical minimal / ambient performance, but much like in the work of singular Irish artist Michael O’Shea, there’s a deeper level of intrigue and mysticism buried deep within the overtonal picture.Very special!(NM / NM - with insert)
