We usually resist burrowing into the vast world of Italian Library music but once every so often one pulls us in.Legendary Italian composer Piero Umiliani was responsible for a huge list of well known film scores and soundtracks, but releases on his ‘Background Music’ series throughout the late 70’s pushed the composer to explore the potential of electronic instruments and synthesisers along with layered acoustic sound.The suitably vague ‘Atmospheres’ LP depicts a blurred cityscape on the cover and little mention of any of the artists at work, whereas the functional music within aims to describe natural phenomenons, great events and far away in time and space.Untethered from any specific cinema projects, Atmospheres harnesses Umiliani’s unique ability of thematic suggestion, together with avant-garde studio techniques to create a masterpiece that still stands strong to this day.Rare 1979 OG on Omnicron… (NM/VG++)
